Instrumental hip hop duo The Cancel is the fruit of a collaboration between Andrei Zelenskii and Dmitrii Fedusiv, two Ukrainian musicians with a common passion for jazz music and old vinyls. Their music finds its roots in the works of jazz maestros such as John Coltrane and Miles Davis passed through the filter of modern electronica-influenced hip hop (think Ninja Tune or Stones Throw).

After a very well received debut LP released last year, The Cancel are back with Reply From Space, a very strong second offering for the young duo. With its effortless combination of live drums, samples and layered synths, this record is a delicious collection of low-key instrumental pieces that blurs the borders between jazz, electronica and hip hop.

Masked London post-dubstep producer SBTRKT (Aaron Jerome in real life) had a massive 2011, but his career actually started long before this sudden wave of success. He began his DJ career at Plastic People in London and started sharing his music back in 2009, slowly building a loyal fan-base that has followed him all the way to the release of his impeccable self-titled album last year.

The track SBTRKT shared a couple of weeks ago turns out to be one of his early unreleased compositions. “Atomic Peace” was first included in STRKT’s sets back in 2009 but the song was never released due to sample clearance issues (it uses a sample from Múm’s “Flow Not So Fast Old Mountain Radio”). After a long delay, it is finally available for fans to enjoy! Stream it above and don’t forget to check out the remix by Hannes Fischer just below…

Jeremy Malvin, aka Chrome Sparks, grew up in Pittsburgh and then moved to Ann Arbor to study percussion at the University of Michigan. Now the young beatmaker just chills and makes glitchy dreampop, when he isn’t playing drums for StepDad or making high-energy remixes under his Professor Purple alias. The latest result of his musical experiments is a new 7-track EP, released as a free download via BandCamp.

On the heels of their mini-album Knee Deep, released last April, Copenhagen’s WhoMadeWho recently announced the imminent release of their third LP, called Brighter. The trio originally planned to put out this new album at the end of 2011 but it has been re-scheduled for February 27th 2012. The amazing first single “Inside World” will be out on January 23rd via Kompakt and, as a B-side, it will include an acoustic version, featuring John Grant on vocals.

Formed in 2008, Pallers are a blissed-out electronica duo who make “Dance music for the lazy, the blazers and for the slightly depressed”. At the helm of this musical ship, long-time friends Johan Angergård (Club 8, Acid House Kings, The Legends) and Henrik Mårtensson build an ever shimmering mosaic of sounds in which every element is integrated with such ease it almost seems effortless.

The duo’s monumental debut album The Sea of Memories was produced and recorded during three years’ time in apartments, basements, villas and cabins in Pallers, La mar, Stockholm, Miami and Cape Town. Ten tracks where the ever growing melodies and muffled beats beneath the surface transform the listening experience into a space voyage of emotional discoveries.

On December 6th, Vancouver-based musician Teen Daze will release a free compilation on his own digital label Cultus Vibes, launched at the beginning of the year. Featuring new tracks from artists such as Bank Heist, Parish Of Little Clifton, Manitoulin and Des A Boda, the compilation will be an early Christmas present to all ambient / dream pop lovers. Cultus Vibes: Together will also include Teen Daze’s own contribution “Winter Sun”, a gorgeous piece with layered synths and a nice beat.

Originally hailing from London, Woolfy started hitting the clubs in Los Angeles as a teenager and by the time he turned 19 he already knew DJing was his destiny. So he bought a couple of turntables and before you know he was playing his first gigs around LA!

The rest is history: he founded the deep house & funk club Pressure, became a resident DJ at the legendary Café-Club Fais Do Do and started the duo Projections with Danny Hastie in 2000, as well as the underground band Sounds From The Ward. If the latter remained dormant, Projections went on to sign with Guidance Recordings and subsequently released the album Between Here & Now in 2002 and a handful of singles, giving Woolfy some well deserved exposure on the club circuit and amongst electronica enthusiasts.

While in New York around 2004, Woolfy met DJ Spun of Rong Records playing at his local. A few bottles of rum later, a deal was struck to release Woolfy’s first solo single “Oh Missy”, as a split single with Projections. Fast forward to 2009 and the release of the album If You Know What’s Good For Ya!! including standout tracks “Odyssey”, “Looking Glass” and “Two Far Gone”…

Continue reading »]]> Memory Tapes is one of the numerous recording aliases of New Jersey-based musician Dayve Hawk (also known as Memory Cassette and Weird Tapes). This musical project is mainly aimed at lovers of laid back psychedelic electronica (think Phantogram or Washed Out) who will enjoy its home-made, low-budget feel.

Player Piano is Hawk’s second full length as Memory Tapes, following his acclaimed 2009 debut Seek Magic, recorded in his  home studio in rural New Jersey. Player Piano‘s The album works with sparse and dreamy soundscapes to build handcrafted tales of loneliness and bad romance that draw quiet power from Hawk’s charmingly reedy vocals. The layered synths of songs such as “Today Is Our Life” or “Wait In The Dark” resonate with nostalgia and ache.

Once the solo project of 24-year-old musician/producer Dan Moss, Dems has now become a trio and they seem set to be amongst the most significant discoveries of 2011. The two new members, multi-instrumentalists David Gardener and Duncan Mann, joined the project when Moss moved back to his native London after spending over 2 years in Edinburgh. Now a three piece, Dems make stirring electronica embellished with interweaving melodies and elements of warp-esque IDM.

With big support coming from BBC Radio 1′s Jaymo and Andy George, Rob da Bank and Pete Tong, their brand new single “House” has the potential to become a real hit. Effortlessly combining gorgeous guitars riffs and atmospheric sounds, the song pierces right through you. Dems’ debut EP will be available digitally and on vinyl, from November 14th through Bad Life, with sparkling remixes coming soon from Evil Nine, TWR72 & Jean Nipon.
