saturday nite with… THE PHENOMENAL HANDCLAP

The Phenomenal Handclap Band is a tight-knit aggregation of musicians and artists from Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. At the center of it there are two talented musicians: Daniel Collás and Sean Marquand, who, after years of searching and contemplation, through live performance and the manipulation of recorded music, have finally succeeded in realising their singular musical vision. They have gathered around them talented musicians such as Patrick Wood, Nicholas Movshon, Luke O’Malley, Laura Marin, Quinn Luke, and Joan Tick, enhanced by the remarkable talents of Aurelio Valle, Carol C, Jaleel Bunton, Bart Davenport, Jon Spencer, and Lady Tigra, among carefully chosen others.

The Phenomenal Handclap Band – Tears

Together they have crafted a sound that is equal parts anthemic, dancefloor-oriented and orchestral, borrowing elements from progressive rock, disco, electro, and psychedelia.

The Phenomenal Handclap Band started when Collás and Marquand, two New York underground club DJs, became restless with the concept of playing other people’s music. Both had also been involved in the thriving nightlife scene and had an almost encyclopedic knowledge of esoteric music ranging from Brazilian soul to vintage psych-rock. As a band The Phenomenal Handclap have put together a stunning debut album which is the harmonious culmination of their diverse musical backgrounds.

SEÑOR STEREO – HOT DAMN (Club/Disco/House – US)

Señor Stereo is Joe Maz, Danny Daze and Gigamesh (already well known for his stellar remixes of tracks by Animal Collective, Classixx or Lykke Li). Backed by Kill The Noise and DJ Craze’s label Slow Roast, the band recently released their debut EP, Unintentional, and it’s massive!

These guys, who also have their won solo projects on the side, definitely work well together. Their groove is amazing and their tracks sparkle like a disco ball, filling the room with energy and excitement. Mixing classic house elements with disco-friendly horns and funky bassline, Señor  Stereo sounds fresh and unapologetic, just what you need for a perfect summer party.

Senor Stereo – Hot Damn!

“Hot Damn!” is one of the 5 original tracks you will find on the Unintentional EP, available worldwide since June 29. This track is clearly more influenced by French house but the EP mixes a lot of different genres: from italo disco to electro funk and techno, it’s all on here. Melody-based and filled with addictive vocal hooks, these songs will give you the uncontrollable urge to dance yourself crazy…

ANNIE – SONGS REMIND ME OF YOU (Disco/Pop – Norway)

It’s been a while since we last heard about Norwegian electropop princess Annie but the wait is over and we’re in for a treat today. It turns out Annie is back with a new release, available for download now on Songs

Although technically “Songs Remind Me Of You” is not a new track, it has been remixed by Australian disco band The Swiss and Sydney-based veteran DJ Donnie Sloan and the result is just mind-blowing! Annie’s soft vocals are carried by strong drums and shooting synths that will make your head bob and your feet tap.

For those of you who don’t know Annie yet, she is a chart-friendly electropop singer songwriter who got her breakthrough in 2005 with her unforgettable single “Heartbeat”. Her first album, Anniemal, was, as Annie likes to call it, ‘pop with strange edges’ and it was praised by critics and bloggers alike.

On her second album, Don’t Stop, this ‘pop with strange edges’ is also pop with twists and eccentricities so surprising that the tunes persistently demand a double take. With collaborators including Richard X (Róisín Murphy, M.I.A) Paul Epworth (Tracey Thorn, Friendly Fires) or Xenomania (Kylie Minogue, Sugababes), Annie has put together a solid collection of schizophrenic pop numbers that blend all the genres she is so fond of. Check out how Skatebård reworked Annie’s awesome cover of 80s cult disco pop track “Two Of Hearts”…

Annie – Two of Hearts (Skatebard Remix)

Pretty cool, huh? Well, The new remix of “Songs Remind Me Of you” keeps the same disco mood but has this really upbeat happy vibe to it that makes it a perfect summery tune. Get it on Songs

GRAND POPO FOOTBALL CLUB – VENOM IN THE GRASS (Indie/Electro – France)

Grand Popo Football Club is a French electro band created in the late 90s by Ariel Wizman and Nicolas Errera. Ariel Wizman is a well known TV anchorman, who also deejays in clubs and on Radio Nova. Nicolas Errera is a producer and a classically trained pianist, who studied at the National Conservatory in Paris.

The duo apparently adopted their unusual moniker after Wizman visited the West African village of Grand Popo to film a television programme and decided that the community was missing a football club. GPFC’s first recording appeared on the Source Lab 3 compilation in 1996, but they did not release their debut, Shampoo Victims, until 2000 (the album was re-released two years later). The hit single “Les Hommes C’est Pas Des Mecs Biens” appeared on their first album.

Grand Popo Football Club – Les Hommes C’est Pas des Mecs Biens

Over eight years after their debut, Ariel and Nicolas got back into the studio and teamed up with Tania Bruna-Rosso to make a new record, Venom In The Grass (released in February). Tania lends her voice to some of GPFC’s new material, including the first single “My Territory”. This is a great electro disco song with sweet vocals and glistening synths and it clearly shows that GPFC are back in good form.  The track has been remixed by the likes of Joakim, Krunk and Don Marciano. Check out Joakim’s vocal remix just below..

CHROMATICS – NIGHT DRIVE (ItaloDisco/Electronica – US)

Let’s go back in time a little and introduce Chromatics! They have long been amongst our favourites but never made it to these pages but this is just about to change.

Chromatics are part of the Italo Disco revival that has seen the emergence of other bands such as Glass Candy, Heartbreak or Telefon Boys. They use this musical genre and put their own twist on it, infused with sad romanticism melodramatic string arrangements and dirty disco beats. Check out their cover of Kate Bush’s monumental “Running Up That Hill”…

Chromatics – Running Up That Hill

Based in Portland, the band is the brainchild of Adam Miller, who teamed up with Johnny Jewel (one half of duo Glass Candy) in 2004 to work on a new record and later recruited vocalist Ruth Radelet in 2006. They released the In The City EP on underground label Italians Do It Better in autumn 2007, closely followed by a fully fledged album, Night Drive, also known as IV.

Chromatics – Mask

When Ruth grabs her mic and her breathy vocals come out sad and melancolic, the tone is set. “Mask” is a song you listen to at night, in the car or at home, when you’ve just returned from a club but the night hasn’t really worked out the way you planned. With your clothes in a bundle on the floor, the vague smell of cigarette and sweat, you lie down, push the volume up and the room stands still for 5 minutes while emotions rush to your mind and tears fall down your cheeks.

GOLDEN BUG – FLAMINGO (Disco/Funk – France)

Golden Bug is back with a brand new EP: The Game/Flamingo! Antoine Harispuru, aka Golden Bug, is releasing this EP tomorrow February 19th on super cool label Gomma Records and it will be followed by a Flamingo Remix EP on February 26th.

Influenced by all the 70’s and 80’s funk and electrofunk, Golden Bug’s music has been described as a mix between dark italo disco, dirty funk, futuristic electrobeats and robotic vocals, cut up fervently like powder on a glass table at Studio 54. I would say his music is unusual and highly danceable.

Golden Bug – Flamingo

Golden Bug is also behind some crazy remixes for artists such as Lost Valentinos, Adam Freeland or Two Door Cinema Club
