THE RAPTURE @ PANTIERO FESTIVAL

San Francisco-born, New York-based post-punk band The Rapture have been in the music business for over a decade now and it really shows! Luke Jenner, Vito Roccoforte and Gabriel Andruzzi (who replaced Matt Safer on bass guitar in July 2009) know how to galvanize the crowds and get the party started. Starting their hour-long set with three of their most contagious hits (“Don Go Do It”, “Pieces Of The People We Love” and “Get Myself Into It”), The Rapture were coming on strong!

The rest of the performance was handled with brio by the three musicians. Their blend of post-punk, dance, disco, electronica and indie rock turned out to be as effective live as it is on their last album to date Pieces Of The People We Know (Universal Motown Records, 2006).

The Rapture – Get Myself Into It

We caught up with the band a couple of hours before the concert under the sun and asked them a few questions about their new album, their best concerts and more…

- When will your new album be released?

Magic question!

- How has your sound evolved? Can you describe it in a few words?

Well, it’s kinda stupid to describe music, you need to listen to it really…

- Do you all sing on this album?

No! No it’s just me (Luke)… There’s a lot of vocals on this album. Each song either has a lot of vocals on it or a lot of keyboards.

- How has Europe been treating you so far? Do you find it harder to relate to audiences here?

We’ve been coming to Europe for the past 8 years. It’s kinda normal to come to Europe for us. And it’s different from the US, but also France is incredibly different to play from the UK or Germany. It’s really more of a city to city thing… and can be even city to city and venue to venue. Some venues people just feel better and make us feel better and some are harder venues to play… It can even be day to day. I mean if you learn anything from being in a band it’s that you really can’t expect anything: a lot of times the best shows that you had, you will go back to that same audience and something will be really off. It’s like you can’t ever control what’s gonna happen and that’s kind of the most beautiful part… Tonight could be the best show we’ve ever played or the worst show we’ve ever played.

saturday nite with… YUKSEK

French-born DJ, producer and remixer Yuksek (aka Pierre-Alexandre Busson) has been collecting an ever-growing halo of buzz in the past couple of years. Originally signed to Birdy Nam Nam’s label, he has crafted some of the hottest remixes released in the first half of 2010. His work includes remixes for by The Kaiser Chiefs, M83, Gorillaz, Bot’Ox, Peaches, Siriusmo, Teenage Bad Girl, Van She, Chromeo, Adam Kesher… and the list goes on!

A classically-trained pianist, Yuksek spent his adolescence practicing piano several hours a day at music school but couldn’t seem to reconcile this routine with his love of pop music.  Indeed, his childhood was spent listening to The Beatles and Gainsbourg and he was later drawn to the early West Coast rap and stunned in his early secondary school years by Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”.

Yuksek – So Far Away From The Sea (The Twelves Remix)

This variety of influences is what you can find on his debut album, Away From The Sea, released in 2009. Now Yuksek’s problem may be his desire to put a little bit of everything in the mix. While his beats and production are both impressive, the album as a whole falls somewhat short of expectations. There is still plenty of good material on the album and it’s a credible debut effort for an artist who sure as hell has plenty to offer.

THE LOWBROWS – DREAM IN THE DESERT (Electro/Dance – Japan)

The Lowbrows are a creative unit that was formed in 2005 by Chaki (multi instrumentalist and DJ) and Emi (classically trained musician). Their edgy  electro dance sound is always looking towards the future, and gives you a sense of innovation with every listen!

The Lowbrows – Dream In The Desert (Flight Facilities Remix)

Their first self titled EP was released in March 2007 but is no longer available. They gained attention in February 2008, when a then unreleased track “Melody & Shudder” was remixed by Dexpistols and featured on their compilation Apple.Lesson.4. They would also gain further attention when the Bang Gang Deejays featured ‘Dream In The Desert’ on their compilation; ‘D is For Disco, E is For Dancing’. As a matter of fact, Chaki has performed DJ sets alongside the Bang Gang Deejays, but also Hot Chip, Friendly Fires, Digitalism…

With an amazing reputation for their remix work, they are receiving a rush of offers from both Japanese and international artists (Simian Mobile Disco, Chromeo, 80Kidz). In between remixes and gigs, they released an album, For Whom The Bell Tolls, and more recently a mini album, Danse Macabre.

The mini-album has eight tracks in total, including a reworking of the glorious “Dream In The Desert” (get it on Beatport or iTunes). A new fully fledged album, ripe with fresh material is expected in early 2010… In the meantime, check out their MySpace for updates!

SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO – CRUEL INTENTIONS (Club/House – UK)

English producer duo Simian Mobile Disco are blessing our ears with yet another dancefloor-ready electro jewel: “Cruel Intentions”.

This new track, which features The Gossip’s Beth Ditto on vocals, is an instant hit with minimal instrumentation, dirty bass and a catchy hook. Beth Ditto reveals her inner disco diva in a track that could be described as a mash up of retro electronic, 80s synth pop and strip joint music…

Simian Mobile Disco – Cruel Intentions

Simian Mobile Disco was originally formed as a traveling DJ duet for James Ford and Jas Shaw, who were playing on the side of their early four-piece band Simian. They ultimately released a number of low profile singles, such as “The Count” on Kitsuné, but arguably gained more fame for their remixes of artists such as The Kills, Klaxons, Peaches, The Presets and others.

The band’s debut album, Attack Decay Sustain Release was released in June 2007 on Wichita Recordings. Among the tracks included on it are “Hustler”, “Tits and Acid”, “I Believe” and lead single “It’s the Beat”. After the album’s huge success, the duo toured around the world and kept releasing remixes for high profile bands.

Their sophomore studio album Temporary Pleasure, released in August 2009, features many guests that they met through their work as producers or while touring: Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals, Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip, Beth Ditto and Chris Keating of Yeasayer.
