After a (very) long wait Melbourne-based producer Knightlife, aka Mike Gamwell, is releasing not one, but two new EPs in less a month via Cut Copy’s label Cutters Records. First there was a nice 3-track appetizer featuring lead track, “Serves You Right”, a remix by Emperor Machine and another original track called “Otherway” and now the mothership has come to earth in the form of the 8-track, I Want You EP, which is Knightlife’s most substantial release to date.

Continue reading »]]> In less than eight years, Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes (better known as The Presets) have worked their way up and out of the musical quagmire of Sydney’s club scene to become Australia’s foremost proponents of twisted electronic pop.

Ever since their 2003 debut EP, The Presets have enjoyed steady popular success, with their eclectic mix of electro, rock, techno, pop and a handful of other genres. Now, it has been three years since they made their jump to the big time with their acclaimed sophomore album Apocalypso and critics are starting to speculate as to when the next album will be released and what it will sound like. And while no one knows which musical direction the pair will be taking, what we do know is that Julian Hamilton (keys and vocals) and Kim Moyes (drums and keyboard) are currently in the studio working on new material.

This might just be the perfect time to give a quick roundup on some of the best remixes that have surfaced in the past few years. Now, as you can imagine there have been loads of remixes, edits and reworks of Presets’ songs by many talented artists (Simian Mobile Disco, Lifelike, Jence, Heartbreak, Cut Copy, Van She, Miami Horror, Kris Menace). Continue reading »]]> Melbourne’s finest, Cut Copy, have been busy this year, hopping from continent to continent in their marathon quest to spread their critically-acclaimed album Zonoscope across the globe.

They’ve just announced a string of new dates across the US and Europe, including the inaugural Pitchfork Music Festival in Paris, as well as the long running one in Chicago. The icing on the cake is that they will be supported by Washed Out and Midnight Magic during the US leg of their summer tour.

In preparation for the festivities, the Cutters are releasing a special remix courtesy of Toro y Moi (aka Chaz Bundick). Bundick gives his masterful touch to their new single “Blink And You’ll Miss A Revolution”, turning it into a slinky bright disco hymn.

Continue reading »]]> It’s been a long and painful wait but we can finally see light at the end of the tunnel. Indeed, there’s just over two weeks to go until Australia’s finest pioneers of disco synth pop Cut Copy release their new album, Zonoscope, on Modular Records.

After their highly praised 2008 release, In Ghost Colours, which spawned gorgeous singles such as “So Haunted”, “Hearts On Fire”, “Lights and Music” and “Far Away”, expectations are high for its long-awaited follow-up. Well, judging by the quality of the first single taken off Zonoscope, Cut Copy are not going to disappoint.

As one would expect with any Cut Copy release, “Take Me Over” has been remixed by a host of prestigious artists, including Mylo, Flight Facilities, Azari & III, Midnight Magic… First up is Flight Facilities, who give the track their trademark funky tropical vibe, turning it into a bashy summer slow-jam with warm synths, wah wah guitar and even some sea gull samples.

Mylo takes a different approach to this track and decides to go all out on big beats and clubby synths. This six and half minute long super sleek electro extravaganza takes things back to the disco and we thank him for that.

Continue reading »]]> After a two-year break, disco punk torchbearer and Gomma label boss Mathias Modica (aka Munk) has just announced the release of a new EP, Mondo Vagabondo, which will be out on October 18 on Gomma Records.

The Italo-German DJ and musician has released two critically-acclaimed albums so far: Aperitivo (2004) and Cloudbuster (2008). He has collaborated with many iconic artists, such as LCD Soundsystem‘s frontman James Murphy, Micky Moonlight and Italian actress Asia Argento.

Munk’s effortlessly cool mix of futuristic disco and classic house has been hailed by critics. NME even called him “the most influential German disco act since Moroder… like a European version of New York’s DFA”.

Time for a little Cut/Copy update! After their acclaimed sophomore abum In Ghost Colours Modular, 2008), the Melbourne-based band embarked on a lengthy world tour and then decided to take some time off to work on new material. While they still occasionally came under the spotlight with some remixes they did for bands such as Cansei De Ser Sexy, Ladyhawke or The Juan MacLean, Dan Whitford, Tim Hoey and Mitchell Scott were keeping a relatively low profile.

Now Cut/Copy are back in the eye of a storm with a brand new song “Where I’m Going”, taken off their as-yet-untitled third album (due early 2011). The song was premiered on Australian indie radio Triple J last month and was then made available for free download on the band’s website.

The song will also be released on vinyl this month. It will be available as a strictly limited, one-sided etched 7″. To celebrate the release of their new song Cut/Copy are now back on tour playing some new tunes and old favorites to festival-goers and clubbers alike (US in August and Australia in October).

Having now relocated to LA, he is spending less time DJing and concentrating on production work. He has released a few original tracks and some pretty amazing mashups.

Continue reading »]]> Moullinex (now spealt with two l’s) is the moniker of Dj/producer/composer Luis Clara Gomes, who is originally from Viseu, a small countryside town in Portugal, but now based in Munich. Ever since his first productions started being released, he has received scores of remix requests by such artists as Sebastien Tellier, Cut Copy, Who Made Who or Two Door Cinema Club, and labels such as Kitsuné, Modular or Compost.

Between worldwide touring and constant studio work – and while refusing to give up a career in neurology and astronomy research – he also helped to found Discotexas, a record label and collective of artists from sunny Lisbon. Discotexas has just released the Forbidden Cuts EP featuring Moullinex, Xinobi and Rockets (download it for free HERE).

In 2009 Moullinex signed to Gomma Records, for which he is recording a full-length album. His first LP should be out in spring! On this album he is on a perpetual quest to avoid repetition of what he’s done before and this is why Luis invited friends to join his ranks. They helped him in shaping a sound always infused with eclecticism and also developed a live show, where fresh tracks are taken to a whole new level of interaction.
