Canadian singer/pianist Béatrice Martin, better known as Coeur de Pirate, released her much-anticipated sophomore release, Blonde, on November 8th via Grosse Boite Records. This new record is bouncier and more upbeat than the young chanteuse’s previous effort, giving plenty of room for seeping strings arrangements and jazzy big band elements. The first single is the lively retro pop number “Adieu”, which you can sample below.

Continue reading »]]> Young Empires are Robert Aaron Ellingson, Jake Palahnuk and Matthew Vlahovich out of Toronto, Canada. Formed in October 2009, the trio describes their style as “world beat haute rock”. After releasing their self-produced debut EP online and getting the song “Glory of the Night” featured on Parisan fashion/music label Kitsune’s Maison 10 Compilation in 2010, Young Empires are now poised to release their highly anticipated debut album.

Canadian electro disco duo Light Fires is a new project spearheaded by Regina (indie rock singer Gentleman Reg’s glammed-up alter ego) and James Bunton (of OhBijou fame). The pair’s debut single “Ten Feet Tall” was self-released as digital download and 7″ white vinyl in July, featuring B-side “If You’re Bored” and digital-only bonus “If We Got Along Ever”.

“Ten Feet Tall” has been picking up momentum in the past couple of weeks with the recent release of a new remix by Toronto-based producer Jeremy Glenn. This pumped-up disco reinterpretation is a dark and haunting piece of dancefloor-friendly goodness. Surrender to its steady beat and ghostly synths!

On December 6th, Vancouver-based musician Teen Daze will release a free compilation on his own digital label Cultus Vibes, launched at the beginning of the year. Featuring new tracks from artists such as Bank Heist, Parish Of Little Clifton, Manitoulin and Des A Boda, the compilation will be an early Christmas present to all ambient / dream pop lovers. Cultus Vibes: Together will also include Teen Daze’s own contribution “Winter Sun”, a gorgeous piece with layered synths and a nice beat.

Continue reading »]]> Montreal-based duo Flowers and Sea Creatures have been building a formidable reputation since their debut EP Test Pressing in 2010. This first effort and its follow-up, A.M. released in February 2011, have been turning some serious heads in both the electronic underground and the alt-rock overground. FASC deliver a deeply atmospheric and cinematic sound – Graham Baxter’s powerful tenor and crystalline acoustic guitars riding over Kosta Megalos’ future-disco beats and eerie moods. The album is masterfully produced by a trio of top-drawer producers – Ewan Pearson, ex-Montrealer Fred Everything and The Revenge – all three of which already helped shape both the EPs and now their debut album, simply entitled Flowers and Sea Creatures.

Flowers and Sea Creatures are notoriously reclusive, recording away from the cut and thrust of the Montreal scene in an attempt to carve out a unique sound. Asked about their inspirations, Baxter obliquely namechecks the understated vocals of jazz trumpeter Chet Baker and the dark shadows of Kubrick’s ‘A Clockwork Orange’. Kosta lists Giorgio Moroder and early 80′s sonic experimentalists The Art Of Noise.

With airplay and sessions for XFM, 6Music and Radio 1 already under their belt, plus warm underground club support coming from future-facing DJs like Visionquest, Sebo K and Andre Lodemann, the time seems ripe for the Canadian alt-discotronica duo’s debut full-length. Seamlessly alternating introspective moments and festive numbers, this album is a rare jewel that makes a point of proving that electronic music can tap into private feelings and emotions  to create songs that can be equally savoured in private or on the dance floor.

French Canadian star-in-the-making Peter Peter is a folk/rock artist who sings minimal pop songs with a touch of diffuse sorrow. His self-titled debut album was released in March 2011 on Audiogram, earning him accolades and praises across the board.

The first single taken off Peter Peter’s album is the sweet and sour “Tergiverse”, which features guest vocals by Quebec’s singer-songwriter Coeur de Pirate (aka Béatrice Martin). The song is now available for free download from Peter Peter’s official site.

Continue reading »]]> Germany Germany is the musical alias of Drew Harris, a Canadian musician/producer/keytarist, who started the project in December 2009. At the beginning Germany Germany was just a form of creative outlet and musical experimentation but, after he started sending out his music to blogs out of curiosity, things quickly got more serious for the aspiring artist. First there were a few very positive reviews on some influential blogs, then two #2 songs on The Hype Machine and now Germany Germany is fast becoming one of the artists to watch in 2011.

Drawing influences from ambient music, electro-house, new wave and post-rock, Germany Germany has released five albums so far. His new full-length, Adventures, was released only a few days ago, on May 15, and with its 17 tracks it’s Germany Germany’s longest album to date.

Effortlessly alternating between introspective electronica and more dancey beat-driven numbers, Adventures sounds like a real journey into Harris’ colourful creative world. Sometimes reminiscent of compatriots Holy Fuck and Crystal Castles, this record has a more pronounced pop sensibility than either of them, which makes it an album that you can as easily listen to at home, as you would in a fancy club or in your car. This also means that Germany Germany may appeal to a wider range of ears and eventually become a real mainstream success.
