Continue reading »]]> In a mere three years, Italian-Belgian electro duo Aeroplane have managed to become one of the most recognised DJ / producer outfits around. With a string of stellar remixes for the likes of Friendly Fires, Sebastien Tellier, Lindstrøm and MGMT and their own piano-sprinkled melancholic tracks, they have built a cult following and their debut album, released in September quite logically arrived with sky-high hopes. All these expectations were laid on Vito De Luca, now flying solo after parting with his bandmate Stephen Fasano.

Overall, the album is a genre-bending journey of groovy cosmic disco rock with no clear destination. Produced and written by De Luca, We Can’t fly is not your typical dance album, it might not even be a dance album at all. Throughout its 13 tracks, De Luca’s love for classic rock is clear and the conspicuous presence of guitars, pianos and organs is here to remind us that he is equally influenced by Giorgio Moroder, Abba, and Pink Floyd.

Aeroplane – Superstar (The Krays Remix)

While influences from across the musical spectrum are  a good thing, this time around the journey becomes difficult to follow. The songs go from atmospheric rock to hints of disco to electro and it can get pretty confusing for the listener. There are some really good tracks on the album, if you listen to them individually, but the album’s lack of cohesiveness makes it hard to find Aeroplane’s actual identity.

In an attempt to transition from amateurish home studio recording practices to a meticulously (over-) produced studio approach, Aeroplane has stumbled upon a problem: how to reconcile immediate dance floor-bound imperatives and more long lasting, artsy and serious home-listening credentials? This tension is probably what causes the album to lose its direction, despite De Luca’s obvious talent and great musicianship.

Continue reading »]]> After the release of his widely praised solo debut Where You Go I Go Too in 2008 and his collaborative album with Prins Thomas II the same year, Norway’s maestro of nu-disco Lindstrøm returns with a new retro-fururistic masterpiece: Real Life is No Cool (Feedelity, 2009). This time he has teamed up with sultry vocalist Christabelle to bring us an edgy pop album of structured chaos, hypnotic beats and mesmerizing vocals.

Christabelle (also known as Solale to Lindstrøm followers) has been working on and off with Lindstrøm since 2001. Their relationship began when she immediately fell in love with his sound after hearing her brother Dennis (a friend of Lindstrøm) play some of his tracks at home. Upon listening, she proceeded to lay down vocals on some of his tracks, and her brother then delivered them to Lindstrøm. His first impression was, “Wow! This sounds totally fresh, wild and quirky”.

Lindstrom & Christabelle’s sticky electro-disco anthem “Baby Can’t Stop” received the remix treatment, turning it into a real dancefloor filler. Aeroplane‘s sublime production gives the song an otherworldly beauty that is hard to convey through words. Listen and enjoy!

Time for a little Cut/Copy update! After their acclaimed sophomore abum In Ghost Colours Modular, 2008), the Melbourne-based band embarked on a lengthy world tour and then decided to take some time off to work on new material. While they still occasionally came under the spotlight with some remixes they did for bands such as Cansei De Ser Sexy, Ladyhawke or The Juan MacLean, Dan Whitford, Tim Hoey and Mitchell Scott were keeping a relatively low profile.

Now Cut/Copy are back in the eye of a storm with a brand new song “Where I’m Going”, taken off their as-yet-untitled third album (due early 2011). The song was premiered on Australian indie radio Triple J last month and was then made available for free download on the band’s website.

The song will also be released on vinyl this month. It will be available as a strictly limited, one-sided etched 7″. To celebrate the release of their new song Cut/Copy are now back on tour playing some new tunes and old favorites to festival-goers and clubbers alike (US in August and Australia in October).

Continue reading »]]> Born out of the ashes of First Day Back, the hardcore band they formed while still at school, Friendly Fires are Ed MacFarlane (vox), Edd Gibson (guitar) and Jack Savidge (drums). They are currently signed to  XL Recordings (also home to Peaches, Dizzee Rascal or Sigur Rós, to name a few).

They make razor-sharp post-punk that makes all the dismal, skinny jeaned ‘80s revivalists you’ve been hearing these past few years look like amateurs. Assured, honest and ultimately sweet, Friendly Fires is a glib reminder that you don’t need much to have an all night disco party and that there’s no shame in getting your groove on!
